Thyroid nodule this question feed

asked by priyam on 24 February 2010 21:50

I'm diagnosed with the thyroid nodule of 2.5 size. Biospy results came negative. It is a benign nodule. But it keeps growing.

Is there any ayurvedic medicine available to shrink the nodule?

Thanks Priya

Doctor's Ayurvedic Advice:-

Thyroid nodules usually are the abnormal growths of thyroid gland tissue which are called as nodules. Usually they are benign and unnoticeable if size is normal.

If the nodules are obstructing or compressing the oesophagus or trachea, this may lead to difficult in swallowing or shortness of breath. Even some patients do complain of hoarseness of voice and even difficulty in speech.

By following alternative therapies, we can try to manage or progress of growth and even we can try to reduce the size of nodules. The therapies usually are ayurveda and siddha medicines, and in some instances homeopathy is also useful.

Yoga for Thyroid

Yoga and meditation is also very useful for this condition. Only fruit diet is recommended for two days in every month. One has to follow proper diet like avoiding white sugar, white flour, greasy foods, preservative foods, caffeine and even alcohol. One has to consume iodine rich food like asparagus, cabbage, onion, oats, pineapple, whole rice, tomatoes, strawberries etc.

In order to reduce stress, one has to follow yoga and meditation regularly. Need to have adequate sleep.

Ayurvedic Medicine for Thyroid

Suggested medications are like using Divya Kanchanar Guggulu and Divya Triphala guggulu are useful for this complaint. Application of Lavana thailam is also very helpful.

Home Remedies for Thyroid Nodule

Usually thyroid nodules are harmless, but a rare chance of malignancy cannot be denied. The allopathic doctor might have advised you to go for Fine Needle Biopsy and my advice is also the same to confirm or rule out other serious illnesses.

If there is history of smoking and difficulty in swallowing and breathing , chances of malignancy is higher. A proper diagnosis is must in this condition. After that you can plan accordingly.

In ayurveda there are medicines to reduce the size of thyroid nodule like Medhohar Vati Kanchanara Guggulu are helpful in your condition.

Avoid caffeine, carbonated, tinned, oily, spicy, fat rich foods, meat, tobacco, sugar, vinegar. Eat organic food with no preservatives or added chemicals. Also have grapes, tomato, carrot, garlic, onion, spinach, cabbage, straw berries. Also do regular exercise.

Ayurveda and Thyroid

Thyroid nodule is a growth of the thyroid tissue which forms as one or more nodules. If it is not malignant and if they are not pressing the nearest structures in neck you can wait and watch for the changes. The exact cause is not clear while some follow with a family history, lack of iodine. It is believed that a increase in the harmone will help to shrink the nodules. It may cause hyperthyroidism with the overfunctioning of the thyroid nodules or hypothyroidism may be due to nodules resulting from Hashimoto's thyroiditis. It must be understood with the thyroid function test and treated accordingly.

Ayurvedic medicines Varunadi Kasayam - 10ml with 40ml of warm water before food twice daily, Divya Kanchanar Guggulu are very effecive to reduce the size of the nodules. It can be taken for 3months and the reviewed. Frequent checkups and followups are necessary in treating it.

Include Iodine rich foods like nuts, garlic, onion, fish, sea weeds, drum stick, iodised sal. Reduce cabbage, cauliflower, soya, raddish, millet, turnip, peaches, coffee, spinach, mustard greens that hinder the absorption in hypothyroidism and you may include in hyperthyroidism. Practise Yogasanas like Sarvangasana, Halasana, Shalabasana which improve the thyroid harmone thereby helping to shrink the nodules.

Hello,

Hello, Gastroesophageal reflux disorder or GERD occurs due to the weakness of the Lower Esophageal Sphincter allowing the contents of stomach to move upwards.Dietary and lifestyle changes contribute to GERD.

Avoid certain foods like chocolate, peppermint, fried and oily foods, spicy sour foods, carbonated drinks, citrus fruits, coffee alcohol etc that trigger the acid reflux. Have your dinner 2-3 hrs before sleeping. Elevate the head side of bed at least 6 inches.

Damage caused by the Chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder can’t be reversed, but with proper medication, further complication can be prevented, and also helps controlling symptoms. If possible change your home to some lower altitude areas. That may help you in relieving symptoms of COPD.

As the needle aspiration showed the result as benign, there is nothing to worry about it.

You can start practicing yoga and pranayama under the guidance of a specialist. Pranayama help you a lot to fight with the climatic conditions and COPD .

You may also take some ayurvedic medicines like sankha bhasma for GERD, Agastya rasayana, dasamoola rasayana , swasandam gulika for COPD.

You may give him Divya Khadiradi Vati, and Divya Sanjeevani Vati which are helpful in such conditions.

Dear Doctor, I am a male 74 years old living in the Nilgiris about 6000 feet above Sea level. I am a confirmed GERD and COPD patient. COPD became worse after I got infected from the molds in the damp wall. This made me dependant on inhalers, Nebulizer with Budecort and Asthalin repsules. Now I noticed a lump on my throat. A needle aspiration showed a benign nodule and was confirmed by the MRI. There is no difficulty in swallowing or breathing.

Hello,

Thyroid nodules are formed when the tissue from the thyroid gland grows abnormally into a nodule. If there are no symptoms that accompany the thyroid nodule, it is probably benign and sometimes it is unnoticeable.

However, if the cells in the nodules are functioning and producing thyroid hormone on their own, the nodule may produce signs and symptoms of too much thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism). A small number of patients complain of pain at the site of the nodule that can travel to the ear or jaw. If the nodule is very large, it can compress the esophagus or trachea and cause difficultly swallowing or shortness of breath. In rare instances, a patient may complain of hoarseness or difficulty speaking because of compression of the larynx or voice box.

A fresh fruit juice diet is recommended for two days, supplemented by drinking lukewarm water to cleanse the system completely. This can be followed by eating plenty of fresh fruits through out the next few days.

Thyroid patients should avoid white flour, white sugar, fried or greasy foods, preserves and condiments, caffeine and alcohol. Their diet should be rich in iodine found in asparagus, cabbage, garlic, onion, oats, pineapple, whole rice, tomatoes, watercress and strawberries. If an alarming weight loss is noticed, a compress should be applied to be stomach and neck during the night. This diet should be followed for a year. Emotional stress should be avoided and it is very important to get adequate sleep.

In Ayurveda it is considered as Medhovikaras. For which there are some medications which may help.

Divya Kanchanar Guggulu, Divya Medohar vati are useful for this complaint.

Please specify if there are any other complaints so that we can suggest medicines accrodingly.

with regards, Dr. Vijay.
